The 46th Session of the UN Human Rights Council began today in Geneva, Switzerland. The High-Level Segment of the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council was convened today and will continue till 23rd March 2021.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Shahid will address the High-Level Segment of the Session via video message today. In his statement, Minister Shahid will brief the Council on the legislative developments under the leadership of H. E. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during the past year. He will also provide an update on the work undertaken at the national level to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and will call for greater international cooperation.
The General Segment of the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council will continue after the High-Level Segment from the 24th of February till 23rd March 2021.
In line with the government’s key policies and priorities, the Maldives delegation will deliver national statements under several agenda items. The Maldives will be delivering a joint statement under Agenda Item 3, General Debate by the Core Group on Human Rights and Environment. The Maldives delegation will also participate in the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and will deliver a statement as a country concerned after his visit to the Maldives in 2019. This session will also consider and adopt the final outcomes of the review of the Universal Periodic Review of the Maldives. Maldives with the Core Group on Human Rights and Environment, will lead the resolution on the right to environment to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Environment. Furthermore, the Maldives will also be a main sponsor of the draft decision that will be put forward to mark the 10th anniversary of the Small Island Developing States and Least Developing States Trust Fund.
The Maldives delegation for the High Level Segment of the 46th Session of the Human Rights Council will be led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid and the delegation will include His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Ms. Hawla Ahmed Didi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, and Ms. Shahiya Ali Manik, First Secretary of the Maldives Mission to the United Nations Offices at Geneva.
