British High Commissioner calls on Minister Shahid

From Ministry of Foreign Affairs

British High Commissioner to the Maldives Caron Rohsler paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, today.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid expressed the Government's appreciation for removing the Maldives from the "Human Rights priority list" in the 2020 Human Rights and Democracy report issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Minister Shahid noted that this was a testament to the progress the Maldives has made in these areas.

Minister Shahid further thanked the High Commissioner for the assistance provided to the Maldives in the lead up to the COP26 to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, later this year. Minister Shahid noted the exemplary chairmanship of the Commonwealth by the United Kingdom and reiterated the support of the Maldives for further strengthening the Commonwealth.

Speaking at the meeting, High Commissioner Rohsler reaffirmed the support of the United Kingdom to key areas of interest for the Maldives, such as climate action, counter terrorism, and defence cooperation.
