Minister of Defence Uza. Mariya Didi concluded her visit to India and returned to Male’ this morning. During her visit to India, from 3rd to 8th February, the Minister met with the Indian Minister of Defence Hon. Rajnath Singh, and discussed ways to further boost Maldives-India defence ties, one of which is through the provision of protective gear for MNDF soldiers involved in Novel Coronavirus evacuation operations. The Minister thanked the Indian government for its assistance in evacuating 7 Maldivians from the virus-hit Chinese city of Wuhan. No Maldivians have yet tested positive for the virus. The Minister also met with the Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, and discussed further boosting of Maldives-India military cooperation. Minister Mariya also met with the senior leadership and doctors of the Indian Army Medical Corps, where discussions focused on SOPs pertaining to Novel Coronavirus Isolation Centers, the provision of protective gear for MNDF soldiers, and provision of aid to Senahiya Hospital. Minister Mariya also visited stalls at the DefExpo 2020, where India’s latest military technologies and innovations were on display. During the visit, the Minister gave a number of interviews to the Indian press, describing the past year as fruitful and “Kaamiyaab”(in reference to the CGS “Kaamiyaab” in-shore patrol vessel gifted by India) for both countries.
The Minister was accompanied by MNDF’s BG Wais Waheed, COL Abdul Matheen Ahmed and LTC Hassan Shahid, along with MP Hussain Shaheem, a member of Parliament’s Armed Forces Committee, as invited by the Indian government.
