Biography

On 17th November 2018, Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali was sworn in as the Minister of Islamic Affairs.

Dr. Zahir obtained his first degree in Usul-al-Din, through a scholarship awarded in 1992 from the Islamic University of Madinah al-Munawwarah, Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Heritage (Figh and Usul Al- Figh) from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. In 2016, Dr. Zahir was awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Political Science from International Islamic University, Malaysia.

Dr. Zahir started his career as a secondary teacher in Majeedhiyya School in 1992. He also worked as a part-time lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), since 2016 up to date. In 1997, he worked at the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, as an Assistant Director. He also served as the Deputy Director in the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, from 2007 to 2009. He also worked as the Director and the Head of Islamic Affairs Division in the Ministry of Islamic Affairs before his appointment as the Minister.

Apart from the aforementioned services, he worked as an Editor for “Al Minbar” magazine (issued in every three months) and for the weekly local newsletter “Hidayatu Ge Ali.” In addition, he worked as a columnist for local magazines and newspapers with his passion for writing and spreading religious awareness. He has also contributed immensely to the community with his work in delivering religious speeches in prisons, Drug Rehabilitation Centers, Army Centers as well as to the general public. He has actively participated in conducting workshops/seminars and presented a range of TV & radio programmes to increase religious awareness and good conduct among school teachers and children.
